Recovery Process

The doctors could correct the problem but not remove the fear that I’d never keep up.

On a spring day after surgery, braces and physical therapy allowed me to put one foot in front of the other like almost anyone else could, I made my way to where the kids played soccer at recess for the biggest step in the healing process. I threw my jacket to the ground and ran towards the ball for the first time in the eight years of my life.

The belief I was broken was replaced with the feeling I could fly.

Free Advice Vol. 2

Once again, it’s time I share some of the wisdom I’ve picked up over the years.

Here’s a lesson I learned about dating when I was a younger and dumber man:

If someone says:

“If I get out of jail by 10 we should totally get a drink”

They don’t really like you; they just hope you’ll drop the theft charge.

(In case you’re wondering, she got out in time for the drink but the charge stuck.)

Last night I was sitting on the couch reading when I spotted my wife doing something unusual at the sink.  I stopped reading and asked:

Honey, what are you doing over there?

-I’m pouring whiskey into this soda can.

Don’t we own glasses?

-Yeah but this way I can have a drink without having to wash a glass.

Clearly I married someone smarter than me.

Free Advice Vol. 1

It’s time I share some of the wisdom I’ve picked up over the years as my way of giving something back to you, the reader.

Here’s a lesson I learned many years ago.

A possible sign you’re in a bad relationship is when the person you’re with says:

“I have never been as attracted to you as I was when you hit that guy in the face with a bottle”

(I was recently reminded of this lesson by @bronwensaurus)

July 4, 1997

She stayed outside when it rained on the Fourth of July until her hair was soaked so I followed her inside to lend a hand.  I was busy with the hair dryer and didn’t hear the knocking.  It was someone’s girlfriend at the door, specifically my girlfriend, who informed me that drying another girl’s hair during parties was taboo.  For years I thought that my then girlfriend overreacted but when I told this story to my wife yesterday she told me I was way out of line.  Lesson learned.
