Cold Water Mornings

Yesterday my hot water heater stopped working. Now since I live in an apartment this shouldn’t be a problem but since I live in a building that can best be described as a cross between a halfway house and the hotel from The Shining, getting repairs done in a timely manner can be tough.

My landlady lives upstairs and she suffers from a myriad of the crazies including excessive saving of everything. She never ever throws anything out. She doesn’t even like it when I throw things out, sometimes she’ll go through my garbage to salvage things she deems valuable. In order to protect my reputation I have taken to disposing of anything that could be called scandalous in the neighbors trash cans and then stepping outside when the landlady starts her search and saying. “My god, will you look at this, what are those perverts doing in there?” She shakes her head and continues looking for things she can add to her piles of junk.

Of course there are benefits to my apartment, I pay about half of the market value for my place and it has parking (big plus in LA) but on mornings when I have no hot water and I don’t know when it’s going to be fixed I begin to wonder if it’s worth the trouble. Hopefully she’ll get someone over today and I’ll have hot water again but if not I’m going to have to start showering at friends places or with friends depending on the situation.
